The Caribbean is a dream destination for countless travelers, and for many people, visiting the region at least once is a lifelong ambition.
Made up of 26 tropical island countries located off the coast of South America, the Caribbean offers warm turquoise seas, swaying palm trees, soft golden beaches, and an atmosphere that makes it easy to understand its enormous appeal.
With so many islands to choose from, however, deciding where to go can be surprisingly difficult. The most famous destinations are not necessarily the places that provide the most memorable experiences.
I have spent a significant part of my life traveling around the Caribbean and have visited 11 of its territories so far. Based on those experiences, I have put together a selection of some of my personal favorites. And for travelers looking for plant-based options, the good news is that several of these islands are also vegan-friendly.
4. St Barthélemy
St Barthélemy is a small French island widely associated with luxury, celebrities, and wealthy visitors. It is often regarded as a playground for the rich and famous, but that reputation should not discourage budget-conscious travelers from experiencing it.
You do not necessarily need to stay overnight on the island. St Barthélemy can easily be visited as a day trip because it is only a short ferry journey from neighboring St Martin.
There are plenty of reasons why this island has earned a place on my list. One of my favorites is the shopping. Gustavia, the island’s capital, is filled with independent boutiques offering distinctive bohemian-style clothing and accessories that are difficult to find elsewhere.
Food is another attraction, with numerous restaurants spread throughout the island offering plenty of choices for visitors.
St Barthélemy also stands apart from many other Caribbean islands. Its landscape is rugged and mountainous, giving it a somewhat different character from the lush tropical scenery found elsewhere in the region. There are relatively few beaches, but the ones that do exist are exceptionally beautiful.
The island has a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere with a charming bohemian character. The residents are welcoming, and Gustavia has a pleasant sense of community that adds to the island’s appeal.
All of these qualities make St Barthélemy a distinctive destination and a place that is well worth experiencing, even if you only visit for a short time.
3. St Vincent and the Grenadines
Technically, St Vincent and the Grenadines consist of several islands, but because they form a single country, I have grouped them together here.
St Vincent itself is a remarkably green volcanic island. Its coastline features dramatic black-sand beaches backed by dense jungle, while rugged rocky headlands divide one beautiful stretch of shore from another.
The scenery is genuinely spectacular and has an almost mysterious quality.
St Vincent also appeared prominently in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. During my visit, I had the opportunity to see several of the locations that were used during filming. After seeing the landscape in person, it was easy to understand why filmmakers selected the island. There is something almost magical and otherworldly about its scenery.
The Grenadines are a collection of smaller islands scattered around St Vincent. Some are so tiny that nobody lives on them permanently.
One of the best ways to explore this island group is by joining a catamaran excursion. The boat can take you from one island to another, giving you opportunities to step ashore and explore different landscapes along the way.
One of the most memorable places I encountered in the Grenadines was little more than a narrow strip of sand with a single umbrella standing in the middle. Moments like that made me feel as though I had discovered my own private desert island.
The combination of volcanic scenery, secluded beaches, tiny islands, and a sense of adventure makes St Vincent and the Grenadines one of the Caribbean destinations that has stayed firmly in my memory.
2. Barbados
Barbados is among the Caribbean’s best-known and most frequently visited islands, but its popularity is easy to understand.
Long stretches of golden sand line the coast, while the calm, clear waters are filled with marine life. I have returned to Barbados more often than any other Caribbean island, and every visit has revealed something new.
Because the island attracts so many visitors, there is no shortage of excellent restaurants, attractive shops, and activities. At the same time, it is surprisingly easy to find peaceful places where you can simply relax.
With so many beaches spread around the island, visitors can often find a quieter stretch of sand away from the busiest areas. For me, Barbados offers an ideal balance between entertainment and relaxation. You can enjoy good food, shopping, excursions, and nightlife while still having plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy a traditional beach holiday.
The island is also home to numerous beautiful boutique hotels, making it possible to find accommodation with plenty of character.
During my trips to Barbados, I have enjoyed a huge variety of experiences. I have swum alongside turtles, helped release young turtles into the sea, gone horseback riding through the mountains, explored caves, snorkelled around shipwrecks, enjoyed excellent food, and even spent nights out at clubs.
In many ways, Barbados offers almost everything you could want from a Caribbean vacation.
If you plan to explore the island, renting a car is something I would strongly recommend. Having your own transportation makes it much easier to discover different beaches, attractions, restaurants, and less-visited corners of Barbados at your own pace.
1. Grenada
Grenada is a remarkably green and tropical island covered with dense forests and abundant wildlife. Often called the “Island of Spice,” it is particularly famous for producing nutmeg and mace.
During my visit, I walked through lush rainforest landscapes and went swimming beneath one of the island’s beautiful waterfalls. It remains one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my years of traveling.
Grenada also seemed to me to be less heavily visited than some of the Caribbean’s better-known destinations. As a result, it appeared more natural, rural, and untouched.
I would need to spend considerably more time there to fully explore everything the island has to offer, but my initial experience was extremely positive. The combination of tropical forests, mountains, waterfalls, plantations, and wildlife gives Grenada a distinctive character.
The island feels particularly appealing to travelers who want to experience a greener and more authentic side of the Caribbean rather than focusing exclusively on beaches and resorts.
Final Thoughts
And that brings my list to an end.
The four islands mentioned above made a particularly strong impression on me, and each offered an experience that was completely different from the others.
St Barthélemy has its sophisticated boutiques and relaxed French-Caribbean atmosphere, St Vincent and the Grenadines offer dramatic volcanic landscapes and tiny secluded islands, Barbados combines beautiful beaches with an impressive range of activities, while Grenada stands out for its forests, waterfalls, wildlife, and natural scenery.
That variety is one of the things I enjoy most about traveling around the Caribbean. Even when two islands are relatively close to one another, they can have completely different landscapes, cultures, atmospheres, and personalities.
You simply never know what the next island will reveal, and that sense of discovery is what makes exploring the Caribbean so rewarding.
