China's enormous geographic area has given rise to an extraordinary variety of landforms, many of which began developing millions of years ago. These remarkable natural landscapes offer endless opportunities for photography and provide spectacular scenery simply to admire.

In China, sandstone and conglomerate formations of this type are known as “Danxia landforms.” Several protected areas across southeastern, southern, and northwestern China preserve these dramatic landscapes shaped by the erosion of sandstone.

The formations share similarities with landscapes found in several national parks in the southwestern United States, including Red Rock Canyon, Zion Canyon, and Bryce Canyon, as well as Australia's Purnululu National Park. Some of China's protected areas combine these unusual rock formations with lush vegetation, waterfalls, rivers, and ancient Buddhist caves. While certain sandstone regions are exceptionally colorful, others are characterized by abundant greenery and historic cultural features.

Danxia landscapes are among China's remarkable natural treasures. Their vivid mountain ridges can look almost like a giant artist's palette turned upside down across the earth.

China Danxia World Heritage Landscape

China Danxia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site representing landscapes formed from continental red terrigenous sedimentary deposits and subsequently shaped by both internal geological forces, such as tectonic uplift, and external processes, including weathering and erosion.

The listed property consists of six areas located within the subtropical region of southwestern China.

These landscapes are especially recognized for their striking red cliffs and diverse erosional features, including natural walls, towers, ravines, rivers, and waterfalls. The rugged terrain has also helped preserve subtropical broad-leaved evergreen forests. The region supports an impressive variety of plant and animal life, with approximately 400 species considered rare or endangered.

Zhangye Danxia Landscape Features

The Zhangye Danxia landscape is characterized by numerous steep red cliffs, many rising several hundred meters high, together with layers of multicolored weathered rock extending toward the horizon.

Some formations are remarkably smooth, while others have rough, heavily eroded surfaces. Their vivid colors stand in strong contrast with the green and gray plains surrounding them, giving the landscape a dramatic and imposing appearance.

Across the Danxia region, countless red rock formations rise in unusual shapes. Some resemble castles, cones, and towers, while others appear to take the forms of people, insects, birds, and animals.

When the formations emerge through mist and clouds, their heights and unusual silhouettes can create an almost dreamlike scene, resembling a landscape filled with fantastic mountains and mysterious pavilions.

The Chinese Red Wave

Approximately 450 kilometers north of Xi'an, China has its own geological formation reminiscent of Arizona's famous Wave.

Known as the “Wave of China,” this landscape is dominated by reddish sandstone, much like the colors of the Chinese flag. The rock surfaces contain unusual swirling patterns and can resemble a three-dimensional optical illusion or “magic eye.”

The area remains relatively undeveloped for tourism, and its facilities and infrastructure are limited. Reaching the site requires a considerable journey, making it a destination better suited to travelers willing to explore remote landscapes.

Longzhou Rural District lies approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Jingbian Township in northwestern Shaanxi Province and about 150 kilometers north of Yan'an.

Watery Taining Danxia Park and Mount Wuyi

Taining attracts visitors primarily because of its boat tours, which provide views of lush vegetation and waterways that create a striking contrast with the drier scenery of Zhangye.

The park contains eroded cliffs and tall rock spires that are frequently covered with vegetation. Located relatively close to Xiamen, the area also features a Buddhist temple built against the cliffs and numerous caves that visitors can explore.

Mount Wuyi is approximately two and a half hours from Taining. It is popular with visitors who enjoy rafting and hiking through landscapes filled with streams and waterfalls, making it a particularly appealing destination for outdoor activities.

Kanbula National Forest Park's Lake and Cliffs

Kanbula National Forest Park in Qinghai Province is known for its rugged cliffs and large reservoir lake.

Unlike many of the other Danxia destinations, Kanbula sits at a considerably higher elevation. Parts of the park reach more than 2,100 meters, or approximately 6,600 feet, above sea level.

The red rock formations here are not as intensely colorful as those at Zhangye. However, the steep cliffs topped with vegetation create a distinctive landscape of their own.

One way to experience the scenery is by taking a boat across the reservoir. Kanbula lies in the upper reaches of the Yellow River.

Rocky Spires of Mount Lang and Mount Wanfo

Both Langshan and Mount Wanfo have been designated as World Heritage Sites.

Mount Lang is characterized by tall, sharply pointed peaks that may remind visitors of the famous Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan landscapes elsewhere in Hunan.

The geology is different, however. Wulingyuan is primarily composed of quartzite, a type of rock that is more resistant to erosion than Danxia sandstone.

Mount Wanfo presents a different appearance. Rather than being dominated by narrow spires, it is characterized by mesa-like formations.

Compared with China's more famous scenic destinations, these two Danxia areas receive relatively few international visitors. Travelers visiting Zhangjiajie can potentially make a detour to explore these lesser-known Danxia landscapes in Hunan.

Mount Danxia's Jagged Hiking Hills in Guangdong

Mount Danxia, whose name has become associated with Danxia landscapes in general, is particularly well known for hiking among sandstone pillars, mesas, and other striking rock formations.

Visitors can also explore portions of the area by boat along the river. The region is not heavily crowded with tourists, making it a good place to escape the busy atmosphere of Guangzhou.

Because the area is relatively isolated, visitors generally stay in nearby Chinese hotels. Its quieter setting makes Mount Danxia especially suitable for hiking, sightseeing, and appreciating the surrounding natural environment.

The Hills of Octagon Village Near Guilin

The sandstone formations in Bajiaozhai Geology Park have a pale reddish-white appearance and are covered with vegetation on their upper surfaces.

Their overall shape can resemble the famous limestone karst mountains around Guilin, although the underlying geology is different.

Guilin is approximately 66 miles, or 107 kilometers, away. Despite receiving relatively few visitors, Bajiaozhai can be incorporated into a trip to the Guilin region for travelers interested in exploring unusual geological scenery.

The Bottom Line

The China Danxia property is state-owned, while the exact form of protection differs among its six component areas. Much of the territory is protected as national parkland, while other sections are classified as national nature reserves, national forests, or geoparks.

Each of the six components is protected under relevant national, regional, and local laws and regulations. These measures provide long-term legal, administrative, institutional, and traditional protection for the site's outstanding universal values.

The remarkable colors found throughout these landscapes developed as approximately 24 million years of red sandstone and mineral deposits accumulated over time. Later, tectonic forces associated with the formation of parts of the Himalayan mountain system compressed and deformed these layers, essentially bending the geological “sheet cake.”

Wind and rainfall then continued the transformation by gradually carving the rock into extraordinary shapes. Natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys, and waterfalls emerged through this long process, with each formation differing in color, texture, shape, size, and pattern.

These powerful geological forces and the enormous amount of time involved are what make China's Danxia landscapes so distinctive, fascinating, and spectacular.

Cosmic Windows

Telescopes are among humanity’s most powerful tools for exploring the unknown. They transform faint light from distant galaxies—mere sparks in the sky—into rich data about stars, planets, and the very origins of the universe. With modern space telescopes like Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we can now peer deeper and clearer than ever before. These “cosmic windows” have redefined what we know about space and opened new paths for discovery.
