From mist-shrouded cloud forests to ancient bamboo groves, the world's forests offer some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes. These verdant wonderlands provide perfect opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and immersing yourself in nature's tranquility. Here are six spectacular forests that belong on every traveler's bucket list.
El Yunque Rainforest, Puerto Rico
Located less than an hour from San Juan, El Yunque Rainforest presents a tropical paradise with rain clouds often suspended over its canopy. This lush landscape features giant ferns, towering palms, and cascading waterfalls. Visitors can choose from various hiking trails, from the accessible La Coca trail leading to spectacular falls to the challenging El Yunque Trail reaching 1,400 feet elevation. The rainforest shelters endangered Puerto Rican parrots, along with diverse lizards and frogs. Don't miss the panoramic views from Yokahu Tower or a refreshing swim in the tranquil lagoon along the El Angelito loop trail.
Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
Walking through Monteverde Cloud Forest feels like stepping into a nature documentary. This magical biological preserve in northwest Costa Rica features mountainous tropical terrain adorned with colorful bromeliads, mosses, and ferns. The forest supports incredible biodiversity, including more than 400 bird species, 100 mammals, and 1,200 amphibians and reptiles. Visitors can spot jaguars, pumas, sloths, and the magnificent quetzal bird. For unforgettable perspectives, take the Sky Tram gondola up the mountain and cross the series of suspension bridges through the treetops, with the option to descend via exhilarating zip-line.
Muir Woods National Monument, California
Just north of San Francisco, Muir Woods presents a humbling grove of coastal redwoods reaching up to 258 feet tall. Often swathed in ocean mist, this marine forest features rust-colored trunks that tower above six miles of well-maintained trails. Starting from the visitor center, paths range from a gentle 30-minute walk along Redwood Creek to the challenging 11-mile trek to Stinson Beach. The forest's serene atmosphere and magnificent trees create an awe-inspiring experience, with options for shorter loops through lush Fern Creek and access to stunning Pacific coastline views.
Daintree Rainforest, Australia
As the world's oldest tropical rainforest at 180 million years, Daintree in Far North Queensland offers an extraordinary ecosystem where rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. This vast green canopy features drooping vines, untouched beaches, and crocodile-inhabited rivers. The rainforest shelters around 3,000 plant species and unique wildlife including cassowaries, tree frogs, and flying foxes. Visitors can explore Mossman Gorge via elevated boardwalks, learn about Indigenous Kuku Yalanji culture on guided Dreamtime Walks, and cross the Daintree River to reach Cape Tribulation Beach.
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Japan
West of central Kyoto, the ethereal Arashiyama Bamboo Grove features towering bamboo stalks that create a mesmerizing, otherworldly landscape. A single path weaves through the grove where columns of bamboo gently sway in the breeze, producing a soothing rustle. Located in the charming Arashiyama district along the Katsura River, visitors can combine their forest walk with temple visits to eighth-century Hōrin-ji and Tenryu-ji. The grove is particularly magical during spring cherry blossom season and autumn when surrounding trees display vibrant fall colors.
Tongass National Forest, Alaska
As America's largest national forest and the world's largest temperate rainforest, Tongass dominates southeast Alaska with its majestic mountains, deep fjords, and brilliant glaciers. This vast northern wilderness features old-growth stands of red and yellow cedar, hemlock, and spruce, providing habitat for black bears, bald eagles, and spawning salmon. Visitors can hike trails like the Mosquito Cove Trail near Sitka, watching for bears during salmon season between May and September. The forest's bubbling streams and lakes also teem with halibut, Arctic grayling, and rainbow trout.
