I first discovered this classic Hong Kong dessert many years ago during a family visit to see our relatives in Hong Kong. It is a refreshing summer dessert soup that can be found in small dessert cafés as well as elegant restaurants.
During my latest trip to Hong Kong, my husband and I enjoyed it again after a delicious Peking Duck dinner. Since then, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this simple yet unforgettable dessert.
What Makes Mango Sago So Special
Mango Sago is a perfect combination of sweet, tangy, and creamy flavors. The smooth mango base is complemented by refreshing citrus notes and the unique chewy texture of small sago pearls, also known as tapioca pearls.
Traditional versions are usually made with cream, milk, and sugar. However, this lighter recipe offers a healthier alternative that is completely dairy-free, contains no refined sugar, and fits a Paleo-style diet.
Choosing the Best Ingredients
You can substitute grapefruit for pomelo if needed, but pomelo is highly recommended whenever you can find it. During Chinese New Year season, pomelo is especially easy to find in many grocery stores.
In Chinese culture, pomelo is considered a lucky and prosperous food often enjoyed during the New Year celebrations. So it is a great time to buy one and enjoy its naturally sweet, citrusy flavor.
For the mango, Ataulfo mangoes are the best choice because they have a smoother texture, richer color, and naturally sweet flavor. If they are unavailable, simply choose mangoes that are fully ripe, juicy, and flavorful.
This dessert is also delicious with only mango and coconut milk, so you can leave out the citrus fruit and tapioca pearls if you want a faster and simpler version.
Recommended Coconut Milk
For Asian-style desserts and cooking, I like using Chaokoh Coconut Milk, which is commonly available at many Asian grocery stores.
Another excellent option is Trader Joe’s Organic Full-Fat Coconut Milk because it does not contain unnecessary additives or thickening agents.
Mango Sago Dessert Recipe
Makes 4 servings
Ingredients
2 ripe mangoes, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup coconut milk
1/4 cup small sago pearls (tapioca pearls)
3 pieces of pomelo, peeled and separated from the white pith
3 pieces of grapefruit, peeled and segmented
1/2 cup coconut water, mango juice, or water (optional)
Preparation Method
Begin by soaking the sago pearls in a bowl of room-temperature water for about 10 minutes to soften them. Drain the water, then cook the sago in a small pot of boiling water over medium heat for another 8 to 10 minutes, until the pearls become fully cooked.
Drain the cooked sago, rinse it with water, and set it aside to cool.
Reserve some chopped mango pieces to use as a topping later. Place the remaining mango into a high-speed blender along with the coconut milk and blend until completely smooth.
If you prefer a thinner, more drink-like texture instead of a thick pudding consistency, add coconut water, mango juice, or regular water to the blender and blend again.
Pour the blended mango and coconut mixture into a large bowl. Gently mix in the cooled tapioca pearls.
Break the pomelo and grapefruit pieces into smaller pieces and fold them into the mango mixture until evenly combined.
Serve the dessert chilled in small bowls and decorate with the reserved mango chunks, extra pomelo pieces, and grapefruit segments.
This tropical Hong Kong-inspired dessert is creamy, refreshing, and full of bright fruit flavors—perfect for warm days or whenever you want a taste of summer.

Koalas: Icons of Australia’s Bush—Biology, Threats, and the Fight to Save Them
With their fluffy grey fur, large round ears, and endearing habit of clinging to eucalyptus trees, koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) have captured the hearts of people worldwide, becoming one of Australia’s most iconic wildlife symbols. These gentle marsupials draw millions of tourists to the continent each year, their presence synonymous with the rugged beauty of Australia’s bushland. Yet behind their cuddly appearance lies a species grappling with unprecedented threats: habitat loss, climate change, disease, and human-wildlife conflict have pushed koalas to the brink of crisis. In 2025, the IUCN Red List classifies them as Vulnerable, while they are listed as Endangered in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory under national law. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and its partners have been at the forefront of efforts to protect koalas, from rehabilitating injured individuals to restoring their habitats and advocating for stronger conservation policies. This exploration delves into the fascinating biology of koalas—dispelling myths, uncovering their unique adaptations—and examines the urgent challenges they face, as well as the collective action needed to ensure their survival for generations to come.
