Growing up in the Midwest, my experience with tea was mostly limited to sun tea and what people called “sweet” tea—which was really just unsweetened tea with a layer of sugar sitting at the bottom of the glass. No matter how much I stirred, I could never make it sweet enough.
Everything changed when I moved to the South as an adult. That was when I discovered authentic Southern sweet tea: tea that is brewed and sweetened properly, with sugar syrup blended throughout so every sip is perfectly sweet.
Discovering Southern Fruit Tea
Sweet tea was not the only Southern drink that surprised me. Before long, I discovered another regional favorite: fruit tea.
At restaurants around Nashville, including places like Legends Steakhouse, Puffy Muffin, The Loveless Cafe, Blue Coast Burrito, and Bar-B-Cutie, fruit tea appears as a beloved beverage choice. It combines sweet tea with fruit juice to create a drink that is golden in color, refreshing, sugary, and unmistakably Southern.
I quickly learned that drinking fruit tea late in the day was not the best idea. Because it contains both plenty of sugar and caffeine, enjoying it after about 2 p.m. could make it difficult to wind down.
The History and Popularity of Fruit Tea
Fruit Tea, also known as Fruit Punch or Tea Punch, is especially popular in Nashville and the surrounding Middle Tennessee area.
The exact origin of this drink remains uncertain, but restaurants continue to prepare and serve it by the gallon. It is a favorite companion for classic Southern foods, including hot chicken, barbecue, afternoon finger sandwiches, and chicken salad lunches.
What Goes Into Fruit Tea?
Tennessee-style fruit tea is much more than simply mixing sweet tea and fruit juice together. The balance of ingredients is what makes each version unique, and every restaurant tends to have its own special proportions.
Many restaurant owners shared the basic idea behind their recipes: sweet tea combined with citrus juice, usually orange juice, pineapple juice, or a mixture of both. Some versions include extra flavors such as ginger, lemon, or fresh mint.
Typically, brands like Tetley or Lipton iced tea are brewed with sugar water first to create the sweet tea base. Then enough fruit juice is added to transform it into the signature golden-colored drink.
Creating a Homemade Fruit Tea Recipe
The recipe sounds easy enough, so I tried making fruit tea at home.
However, getting the flavor exactly right was surprisingly difficult. Brewing tea, preparing sugar syrup, and experimenting with different juice combinations became more complicated than expected. Every attempt seemed close but never quite matched the restaurant versions.
One server even suggested mixing sweet tea with margarita mix. I tried it, but the result was simply another flavored tea—not the true fruit tea I was looking for.
After several adjustments and plenty of experimenting, I finally found the right combination: sweet tea balanced with the sweetness and slight tartness of an orange-pineapple juice blend.
How to Make Tennessee Fruit Tea
The easiest method is to purchase prepared sweet tea and fruit juice from the refrigerated section of the grocery store. This way, the drink is already cold and ready to enjoy.
Shelf-stable versions can also be used, but they should be chilled before serving or after mixing.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Prepared sweet tea, such as Milo’s or Turkey Hill
Orange-pineapple juice blend
Step-by-Step Instructions
Choose your favorite pitcher and pour about half of the sweet tea into it.
Add approximately half of the orange-pineapple juice into the remaining sweet tea container.
Pour the sweet tea from the pitcher into the remaining juice container.
Secure both lids tightly and shake each container well to combine the tea and juice evenly.
A kitchen funnel can make this process easier and help prevent spills while transferring the liquids.
Serving and Storage Tips
That’s all it takes—a simple two-ingredient fruit tea with no complicated preparation.
After pouring yourself a glass, clean the outside of the containers and return them to the refrigerator for storage. If you want a prettier presentation for guests, transfer the drink into a serving pitcher.
The finished beverage has a beautiful amber color and offers the ideal balance of sweet tea flavor with bright orange and pineapple notes.
Tennessee Fruit Tea Recipe
Makes about one large batch
Ingredients
1 bottle (64 ounces) prepared sweet tea, such as Milo’s or Turkey Hill
1 carton (59 ounces) pineapple-orange juice
Directions
Pour half of the sweet tea, about 4 cups, into a pitcher. Add half of the pineapple-orange juice, approximately 3⅔ cups, and stir until combined.
Pour the remaining pineapple-orange juice into the sweet tea bottle and shake well to mix.
The fruit tea in the pitcher can be served immediately, or it can be poured back into the juice container and refrigerated for later enjoyment.
This simple Southern drink is a refreshing combination of sweet tea tradition and bright fruit flavor—perfect for warm afternoons, backyard gatherings, and classic Southern meals.

The Healing Power of Art and Drawing
Stuck one evening in heavy traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard, exhausted physician Kurlen Payton, MD, noticed a green-and-gold ficus tree glowing under streetlights. How Space Probes Work
Space probes are some of the most valuable instruments humans have created for investigating the enormous reaches of our solar system and the universe beyond it. These unmanned spacecraft allow scientists to gather information about planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other distant objects, helping us better understand how the universe developed and whether life might exist elsewhere.
