Let’s be clear: there’s nothing bad about the cucumber roll—it’s just boring. It’s the 2008 Taylor Swift of sushi: inoffensive, but not exactly memorable. Sadly, it’s not worth the price tag for such a lackluster bite.

Contains: Salmon, avocado, cream cheese
Few things spark debate like Brexit—or the Philly roll. I firmly believe cream cheese has no place near sushi, but I have friends who swear by it. Lucky for me (and unlucky for the Philly roll), I’m the one writing this ranking.

7. Dragon Roll

Contains: Eel, crab sticks, avocado, cucumber, eel sauce
Confession: eel creeps me out, thanks in part to the terrifying ones in The Princess Bride. I can’t fully get on board with it, but the crab and avocado in this roll earn it major points. The creamy, briny combo almost makes me forget about the eel.

Contains: Shrimp, avocado, cucumber
Shrimp isn’t just a party appetizer—it’s sushi gold. Some versions even layer shrimp inside and outside the roll, making it a shrimp lover’s dream. More shrimp, more joy.

Contains: Shrimp tempura, avocado, eel sauce
The smooth creaminess of avocado and the crispy crunch of tempura shrimp are a match made in sushi heaven. I’m still not sold on the eel sauce (yuck), but if I close my eyes, I can pretend it’s not there—like hiding under the covers as a kid to avoid the monster under the bed.

If the California roll had a cooler, spicier older sibling, it’d be the spider roll. The crispy tempura crab and kick of spicy mayo make it the best classic sushi roll hands down. I’ve eaten two dozen in one sitting before (no judgment, please)—it’s that good.
Of course, sushi rankings are subjective. Some people swear by plain cucumber rolls, and others hate California rolls (we can never be friends, by the way). You could even skip rolls entirely and go for a sushi donut or burrito. The only universal truth? Cream cheese has no business in sushi—and I’m willing to fight on that hill.
