Humanity’s desire to build upward can be traced back thousands of years, from myths like the Tower of Babel to modern architectural wonders such as the Burj Khalifa. Across history, tall structures have symbolized power, faith, and technological achievement, often defining the identity of entire civilizations.
In ancient times, some of the world’s tallest structures were religious or monumental in nature. The Great Pyramids of Giza, built as tombs for Egyptian pharaohs, once reached over 145 meters and remained unmatched for nearly four millennia. Later, structures such as Lincoln Cathedral in England surpassed them in height, while mountain-top monasteries and palaces like those in Tibet and Mount Athos were designed to bring humans closer to the heavens both physically and spiritually.
The true transformation toward modern skyscrapers began in the late 19th century, particularly in rapidly growing cities like Chicago and New York. After major urban disasters such as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, architects began experimenting with safer and taller building techniques. The introduction of steel-frame construction, safer fire systems, and the invention of the electric elevator made it possible to build upward rather than outward.
Early skyscrapers such as the Home Insurance Building in Chicago marked the beginning of a new architectural era. Soon after, architects like Louis Sullivan helped define the modern “tall office building,” while innovations such as electricity, telephones, and urban rail systems supported dense business districts where workers could easily access high-rise offices. Cities began to grow vertically as land became more valuable and urban populations expanded rapidly.
By the 20th and 21st centuries, skyscrapers had evolved into global symbols of economic power and technological ambition. Iconic buildings like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building once competed for height, but they are now dwarfed by modern giants such as the Burj Khalifa. Today, the race continues, driven by engineering innovation and the constant human desire to reach ever greater heights.

Waterfalls have always fascinated me, whether they are tiny streams cascading gently over a handful of rocks or enormous rivers crashing down from great heights. I have never had any desire to experience a waterfall from inside a barrel, though. I am much happier appreciating their beauty and raw power safely from solid ground.
